Jam Camp is musical adventure for families that is focused on creativity, improvisation, diversity and celebration. Most of the participants involved have an interest in music and are involved in music training, but for some, Jam Camp is the first exposure to music.
Jam Camp is facilitated by a group of musicians who play a diverse range of instruments from several cultural traditions. Instruments that are introduced and used during Jam Cam include the tabla from India, guzheng (zither) from China, djembe and other percussion instruments from Africa, and the violin, guitar, flute, banjo, and mandolin played in both Western (Celtic and Bluegrass) and Eastern cultural styles.
The role of the facilitators during Jam Camp is to build bridges between cultures, age groups, and various levels of musical development. The facilitators create a space where as musicians they can collaborate with the participants in creating new, original and improvised music.
Jam Camp consists of cultural workshops, drum circles, seminars on different instruments, building original instruments, and small group time where the sounds heard throughout the day are synthesized into new, original songs. Each day at Jam Camp ends with an evening campfire jam or activity, where improvisation and sharing sound and space are encouraged.
During the collaboration process, creativity and expression are emphasized over perfection and precision. The facilitators encourage the participants to make a joyful noise and to not be inhibited by negative feelings like "not being good enough". The art of listening to other musicians during a jam circle, as well as the act of holding space within sound, is practiced and encouraged. During Jam Camp, the facilitators focus on allowing a space where everyone can travel with their instruments and voices into creative realms where their own thoughts and feelings can be expressed.
The original songs written during Jam Camp are recorded during the camp, in Nature's own studio. The recordings are then produced into a CD sent to everyone involved in Jam Camp (free of charge) as an audio memory of the experience.
